IPL Photorejuvenation

Intense Pulsed Light effectively treats sun damage, particularly redness and blotchy pigmentation. It is carried out in the comfort and safety of our office by a highly skilled nurse, under the supervision of an experienced Dermatologist. IPL does not disrupt the skin surface, so there is no hiding ('down-time') afterwards.

The diagram below illustrates how IPL photo rejuvenation targets red and brown blemishes associated with sun damage.

With repeated treatments, skin texture can be improved. After multiple sessions, some patients report a decrease in pore size and very fine wrinkles.

What areas can be treated?

The most sun-exposed areas benefit most from IPL photorejuvenation. These include the face and neck, as well as the upper chest, tops of the hands and forearms.

Consultation prior to treatment

IPL is a non-invasive medical procedure. Your skin must be assessed by Dr. Lozinski (an experienced physician specializing in surgical and cosmetic dermatology) to determine whether you will benefit from this treatment. For the best possible results, IPL treatments are customized to your specific skin colouration. Sometimes, other modalities such as neuromodulator (Botox, Newtox), radiofrequency (Thermage, Morpheus8, AccuTite) and filler substances (Restylane, Juvederm, Voluma, Belotero, Teoxane RHA) - alone or in conjunction with IPL are best suited for your specific concerns.

How many treatments are recommended?

Most people achieve significant improvement after five treatments, booked 3 to 4 weeks apart. We therefore recommend scheduling a series of 5 treatments initially.

Is maintenance treatment necessary?

In order to maintain the positive result of 5 initial sessions, we recommend scheduling a maintenance treatment afterward. Two to four maintenance treatments per year are ideal for people who have primarily brownish discolouration from sun damage. Facial flushers need a maintenance treatment every 3 months. Protect your investment with a superior sunscreen daily.

What can I expect during an IPL treatment?

We have found that IPL is very well tolerated with use of a cold contact gel. The entire treatment takes about 35 minutes.

Do I have to schedule hiding time after treatment?

Irregular pigmentation may be slightly accentuated after IPL until subtle exfoliation of these areas is complete especially after the first session. You may also be somewhat pink or red immediately after your treatment. This generally disappears within a few hours. Slight swelling is less common. Most people would not consider rearranging work or social schedules.

Are there any restrictions on IPL treatment?

You should not have a tan at the time of treatment. IPL is not recommended for insulin dependent diabetics since wound-healing is compromised in these individuals. One should keep in mind that this technique is not effective for treatment of deeper wrinkles and sagging. The latter are better treated with filler volumization, radiofrequency microneedling (Morpheus8), AccuTite or traditional surgical techniques.

What other treatments complement IPL Photorejuvenation?

Superficial chemical peels (AHA glycolic acid or salicylic acid) can improve IPL results by about 15%. Peels done a week before each IPL session strip off some superficial skin cells and thus allow better penetration of IPL.

SilkPeel microdermabrasion immediately preceding IPL will have the same enhancing effect.
